G.I. Joe star Channing Tatum has played his share of war heroes, but never one as animated as his mustachioed[大胡须的] Joaquin in The Book of Life.
The 3-D animated tale features a love triangle among three childhood friends, Manolo（Diego Luna）, Maria （Zoe Saldana） and Tatum’s Joaquin, who are stirred up[搅起] after the gods wager[打赌] on which man will win Maria’s heart.
“Manolo and my character Joaquin were best friends, we were all like the Three Musketeers,”says Tatum. “But craziness ensues[相继发生] as the gods wager. Things happen that people won’t expect, I can guarantee[担保] that.”
The story focuses on Manolo, who has big problems besides the growing competition with his best friend. Manolo dreams of breaking away from his family’s rich history of bullfighting to play the guitar, much to the diay[沮丧,灰心] of his father （Hector Elizondo）, the world’s greatest bullfighter and super-macho[男子气的] grandfather（Danny Trejo）.
“Much of this is Manolo’s magic journey. He has to come to terms with[让步,屈服] who he is,” says director Jorge Gutierrez.
This journey takes him from the Land of the Living to the Land of the Remembered, where people who he lived complete lives, and are remembered among the living, go after they die. A final, daunting[使人畏缩的] destination[终点] is The Land of the Forgotten, where those who he died with unfulfilled[未得到满足的] lives dwell[栖息].
Along the way Manolo meets his bullfighter greatgrandfather （Plácido Domingo）, who always wanted to be an opera singer but never followed his dream. There are also wild characters including Candle Maker （rapper Ice Cube）, an ancient god with a body of wax and a beard made of clouds.
The stylized[风格化的] look in many scenes is inspired by a Mexican holiday dear to Gutierrez’s heart： Day of the Dead. It took him 14 years to bring it to the screen.
“I he been pitching[游说] the story and people he been saying,‘This is cool, but you’re never going to get it made,’” says Gutierrez. “To other cultures it might seem dark, but the Day of the Dead is actually a very positive[正面的] thing. It’s about joyfully remembering the people no longer with us.”
The Alabama-born Tatum learned about this world on the job.
“When this was pitched to me, it was like,‘How does this work？ I don’t know much about the holiday.’ But this movie is a mirror of the director. It’s hilarious[欢闹的] and crazy.”
There’s also heart, even in Manolo’s battle with his best friend.
“It goes to a place of sour grapes and deep hurt to the point of losing their friendship,” says Tatum.“But friendship always wins. That’s the message of this story： love and friendship and what you’re willing to sacrifice[牺牲] for these ideas.”

“我不断向人推荐这个故事,大家都说：‘这个故事很酷,但你永远不可能拍出来,’”古铁雷兹说.“对于其他文化而言,它可能挺黑暗的,但事实上,亡灵节是很积极正面的东西,讲的是以快乐的方式纪念离开我们的人.”
出生在（美国）阿拉巴马州的塔图姆在工作中了解了这样一个世界.
